General

  • TERRA 440: Gimme Green: Lawns are undeniably an American symbol. But what do they really symbolize? Pride and prosperity? Or waste and conformity? Gimme Green is a humorous look at the American obsession with the residential lawn and the effects it has on our environment, our wallets and our outlook on life. From the limitless subdivisions of Florida to sod farms in the arid southwest, Gimme Green peers behind the curtain of the $40-billion industry that fuels our nation's largest irrigated crop—the lawn.
  • TERRA 339: A Life with Skulls PART ONE: Ray Bandar is not your average museum curator. How could he be with nicknames like Dr. Bones and Reptile Ray? He spends his days dressed in tattered clothes, walking San Francisco's beaches in search of the ultimate specimens for his collection - and what is he collecting? Skulls! Not just any old skulls though - these skulls are for one of the most diverse and exotic museum collections in the world. Seals, sharks, lions, hyenas - Ray has collected them all! So put on your swim suit and grab a towel as we head to the beach with filmmaker Beth Cataldo for "A Life With Skulls".
  • TERRA 816: Reduce Reuse Recycle-tron Bjorn, a surly viking transported to the present through mysterious circumstances, must come to terms with Resource Conservation (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through the expert coaching of high school students Brenda and Mickey, and their biology teacher, Mr. Wilson. The film is composed of two parts: a narrative and a music video, both overlain with motion graphics. These films were shown to focus groups of 6th-8th grade students to test the educational value and appeal of music videos and motion graphics. This film was sponsored by the Mr. Rogers Memorial Scholarship. Produced by Seth Ring.
  • TERRA 720: Atom:  Atom is a short, animated film about the ‘life’ of Atom X. From the Big Bang to the emergence of life on Earth and beyond, this film tells a rather brief story of, well, everything.
  • TERRA 805: Natabar Sarangi – The Source: Natabar continues to find, save and share his indigenous rice seed with local farmers. To date he has managed to re-introduce over 350 varieties. But it’s not just about the indigenous rice seed of India or about the survival of a sustainable agriculture system with the knowledge of over ten thousand years. It’s about a global phenomenon taking place where a non-sustainable system systematically destroys a sustainable one, where short term profit has the power to overwhelm common sense and the consciousness of many millions, where progress is not progress but the wanton destruction of an eco-system and environment we will never be able to replace.

Species

  • Terra 608: The Species Problem: These days the term 'species' is thrown around as if it were a definite unit, but the realities of defining a species are much trickier, and more contentious, than they seem. ;Biologists have argued over the definition of a species since the dawn of humanity, but have yet to come up with a single species concept that works for all types of life. This film explores current concepts used across the various fields of biology and covers some of the specific problems they encounter.
  • TERRA 823: The Venom Trail: The Venom Trail explores the path venom takes through a body and how the same chemicals are used to make medicine to combat the symptoms. Produced by Steve Spence.

Environmental Harm

  • TERRA 449: Frog, Chemical, Water, You PART TWO:  Amphibians are indicator species. Because of their sensitive permeable skin, scientists use amphibians to gauge the overall health of the worldwide ecosystem that we all share. So with nearly half of the world's amphibian populations in decline, we're all potentially in big trouble. Also Part Three But there are simple things you can start doing today to help.
  • TERRA 717: Whiteout: Whiteout explores the mystery behind the White Nose Syndrome epidemic. Since 2006, over six million bats have been infected and died from the disease. Though it is still a mystery that befuddles many scientists, it is increasingly evident that these incredible creatures are quickly disappearing from the night sky at rates never before witnessed. We follow the filmmaker as she sets out to understand the vital importance of a healthy bat population and how our fate and that of the bats are more closely related than we may think.

Birding

  • LinkTV Episode that includes an interesting section on a group of blind Texans finding pleasure in going birding.
  • TERRA 507: On the Wing PART ONE: On The Wing is a new documentary which tells the story of Portland, Oregon's Chapman Swifts. Each fall these birds roost in the chimney of a Portland elementary school and put on an amazing nightly aerial display to the delight of hundreds and thousands of observers. The event has become a cult phenomenon over the past 15 years and is a shining example of people choosing to coexist with nature rather than smoking it out. On The Wing captures the community, energy and excitement of the entire Swifts phenomenon.

Why does attentiveness to nature matter? In a very fundamental sense, we are what we pay attention to. Paying heed to beauty, grace, and everyday miracles promotes a sense of possibility and coherence that runs deeper and truer than the often illusory commercial, social "realities" advanced by mainstream contemporary culture. ... Our attention is precious, and what we choose to focus it on has enormous consequences. What we choose to look at, and to listen to--these choices change the world. As Thich Nhat Hanh has pointed out, we become the bad television programs that we watch. A society that expends its energies tracking the latest doings of the celebrity couple is fundamentally distinct from one that watches for the first arriving spring migrant birds, or takes a weekend to check out insects in a mountain stream, or looks inside flowers to admire the marvelous ingenuities involved in pollination. The former tends to drag culture down to its lowest commonalities; the latter can lift us up in a sense of unity with all life. The Way of Natural History, edited by Thomas Lowe Fleischner and published by Trinity University Press (Texas)
