2021-07-24 Tamborine MountainWanted: More Bushwalkers

This month Tamborine Mountain Bushwalkers Club is upgrading its profile in the community in a campaign to attract new walkers.  Tamborine Mountain  Bushwalkers Club, along with the Tamborine Mountain Bird Group, comes under the auspices of Tamborine Mountain Natural History Association (TMNHA), which started  back in the mid 1970s. This Association is an environmental organisation  whose focus is the  care of the natural environment. Over time interest groups have emerged. While sharing the goals and concerns of our overarching body, they have also developed the more specific goals associated with their particular group.  The bushwalkers have been walking from 1996 and inevitably over time we have lost members (some are still out there!). But in a sense they still walk with us, and different walks can bring back special memories.

Our Club meets on a regular three-monthly basis for a social occasion at which we plan forthcoming walks and discuss any other business.

We have two walks a month on every second Saturday. Occasionally we create a local walk by stringing together some of the shorter walks here on the Mountain, but most of the time we need to drive, for example up to O’Reilly’s, Binna Burra or Springbrook, all of which offer numerous walks. Walk organisers give shorter versions or alternatives when possible if a walk is a long one or at a more difficult level.

On the subject of local walks, and according to one of the original members John Leiston, the early walkers created local walks, one of which has become overgrown and has virtually disappeared and another is under threat.  These local walks proved to be popular with locals and at times removed the need for long drives to walks further afield.

Over the years we have held successful ‘away walks’ to beautiful national parks such as Girraween National Park for which we based ourselves in Stanthorpe, and other bases such as Mapleton to access the national parks and other interest spots in that area. Any member can suggest a possible longer walk and usually they become the walk organiser if there are enough expressions of interest amongst members.

What we are looking for now are some new members to invigorate the ranks. Perhaps there are ex members who may like to come back.  New to walking? Please join us for a few outings before you decide to become a member.

We know that the current Saturday walk day for our monthly walks is not suitable for those with other sporting commitments. We will have a chance to consider a change to our walking day or at least some more flexibility at our September meeting.

If you have any queries please call Helen on 55450043 or 0478414892 or Dianne on 0403523497. Or you can go to the bushwalker tab on our website http://www.naturalhistory.org.au/tmsite/bushwalkers.

Why does attentiveness to nature matter? In a very fundamental sense, we are what we pay attention to. Paying heed to beauty, grace, and everyday miracles promotes a sense of possibility and coherence that runs deeper and truer than the often illusory commercial, social "realities" advanced by mainstream contemporary culture. ... Our attention is precious, and what we choose to focus it on has enormous consequences. What we choose to look at, and to listen to--these choices change the world. As Thich Nhat Hanh has pointed out, we become the bad television programs that we watch. A society that expends its energies tracking the latest doings of the celebrity couple is fundamentally distinct from one that watches for the first arriving spring migrant birds, or takes a weekend to check out insects in a mountain stream, or looks inside flowers to admire the marvelous ingenuities involved in pollination. The former tends to drag culture down to its lowest commonalities; the latter can lift us up in a sense of unity with all life. The Way of Natural History, edited by Thomas Lowe Fleischner and published by Trinity University Press (Texas)
