Walkers – Jackie, Julie, Paul, Colin
Our party down to four (Julie, Jackie, Paul and me) at start as others dropped out. Weather looked as though it would remain fine - and it did. The walk to Westray's grave was the usual slog with ill-defined path and going astray a number of times. We had Smoko at the creek below Westray's grave and considered the possibility of one day going up to Larapinta Falls. As it happened we met a bushwalker coming back who had just been there. He didn't appear to be too phased by the effort.
After Smoko we went the 150 metres back to the start of the steep climb. All got to top of the hard climb but fixed rope stopped Jackie and Paul decided to stay with her and make their way back to Westray's grave for lunch. Julie and I continued hard slog and got to within 30m of crash site but too slippery to continue as running out of time to be out of the forest by dark. We met Jackie and Paul again at the foot of the steep climb, just before they had intended to start ahead of us. The walk back always seems longer than the walk up and it was made more difficult with the quickly fading light.
We did manage to get out of the forest before dark - but only just. We got back to Beaudesert after 6:00 and decided that we could not miss out on drinks so stopped off at the local pub. A very long day. However I still consider it a huge success for Julie who was utterly determined to go as far as time would permit us, but now I know we have to start very early to allow for rest stops and occasional off-tracks. The walk to Stinson Crash Site is only for the most determined (as Julie was) - Colin.
