Walkers – Colin - Distance: - 20.2k
Today I followed the Ship Stern route in a clockwise direction to the Kooloobano Lookout. As I had recce'd a little way down from here and up a little way from Turtle rock on other occasions I was determined to "fill in the gap" and go the whole way, now that I knew there was an easy way down to the Great Walk track by following the 4wd track down and behind the barbed wire fence property boundary (bushwalkers are free to climb to Turtle Rock without encroaching on private property).
After leaving the Information Centre I arrived at Kooloobano lookout where I had Smoko before proceeding down the climb. It was far more difficult than what I thought it would be. Ropes and harnesses needed and I only had ropes so lowered my bag first (umpteen times) before abseiling myself.
I arrived at the bottom of Ship Stern at 12:30am which was perfect time for Lunch and a good rest as the climb down was longer and harder than anticipated. From here I now had to move fairly swiftly if I was not to run out of light. Next the summit of Turtle Rock after walking across the saddle. Another quick drink at the summit before making my way back to the saddle climb point and then around to the climbers abseil/climb point before wandering down the 4wd route and then along the Great Walk to Nixon Creek and down to Egg Rock.
I arrived at the base of Egg Rock at about 4:45pm. Another quick drink and then the long hard slog back up to the Information Centre - Colin.
