Nine of us set off from the Binna Burra Tea House in entirely unexpected weather (cool and overcast) from the heat and sun of the last few days, heading down the Border Track for the Araucaria Lookout junction where we would turn east.
We stopped for smoko at the Joalah Lookout. As we were making good progress we spent some extra time here discussing the many small black snakes we had seen here on a previous occasion.
A little further on was the junction taking us away from the Border Track and leading us to the Araucaria Lookout. We stopped at the Orchid Bower Lookout. It was clear that we had missed the best display of the orchids but the views from here down to Mt Warning were spectacular as usual. During the walk up to the Araucaria Lookout we passed a variety of fungi and many wildflowers. Jeanette's knowledge of local flora was a real advantage here.
We had lunch at the Araucaria Lookout, splitting into two groups as the sitting area to take advantage of the views was very limited here. It was still rather cool so by the time we started our retun journey some of us were putting jackets and warm tops on. Helen amost stepped on a baby whip snake so we stopped for a good look (the snake didn't want to move off the track) and took photos and video. Helen gently prompted to move off the track so we could continue. It was a leisurely walk back with many stops as we were still making very good time.
At the junction to the Rainforest Circuit track we all stopped again. Some of us decided to return to Binna Burra via the Rainforest Track while the remainder went the usual route along the Border Track.
A very pleasant afternoon coffee, tea and chocolate cake was had at Michele's farm where the usual discussion of future events took place in beautiful surroundings. A wonderful day was had by all with the weather being very kind to us - Colin
