Pat Fitzgerald from here on Beechmont was unable to accompany us on this walk as he did last time we were here, but we quickly saw the results of his weed eradication program. Pat’s father lived down at Killarney Glen and they were responsible for having the area excluded from army use after much damage had already occurred. As we saw Pat is still very involved at Killarney Glen and Denham Reserve and loves people to visit.
After making our way down to Back Creek we explored some of the many cascades and waterfalls cutting their way through the narrow gorge. We did a little more exploration to view things we didn’t get to see last time. The running water has created beautiful sculptured formations all along the creek so cameras were clicking to take advantage of the many photo opportunities to be had. We had smoko before making our way up to Denham Reserve to visit the falls there.
Before we made our way to Denham Reserve we decided to detour for a walk in Marian Valley, a spiritual oasis for Brisbane and Gold Coast Catholics. A very pretty and serene area established by The Pauline Fathers who were invited to Australia from Poland in 1981.
At Denham Reserve we visited the Denham Falls Lookout before making our way down into the gorge. Pat Fitzgerald’s handiwork was on show with the obvious weed clearance and many new plantings marked by sticks. Before Lip Falls we passed over a huge land slip which had taken some time to clear a new track through. At Lip Falls we had lunch and lots more great conversation. After lunch we tried a little more exploration above Lip Falls and a few of us did a little more rock hopping up the creek back toward Denham Falls. This part of the gorge has steep sides but has many large rocks and boulders which makes it feasible to create a walk to lunch below Denham Falls next time we come here.
We moved on to Michele’s farm where we had coffee and wonderfully delicious chocolate cake and discussed final arrangements for our upcoming Border Track walk which will be our next event which we are all looking forward to - Colin.
