After a weather scare the previous evening (a storm front with high winds passing through) we met in glorious sunny weather at the Numinbah Valley Hall, and then car pooled again and drove to park near the Numinbah Valley Correctional Centre.
The start of the walk is a climb over a stile (there are a few stiles up and over fences and some steps before getting to the creek). From here the track goes right to Egg Rock or left to get to Binna Burra via part of the Great Walk track. We had an early morning tea sitting on rocks in the creek as it was a really nice place to just sit and enjoy the area. We had caught glimpses of Egg Rock as we walked.
As there were only four of us we decided at smoko that we would try some exploration of the Egg Rock area. After crossing the creek we turned right to go down to Egg Rock. At the fence to the Correctional Centre we did a bit of “bush bashing” to get down to the creek bed and then rock scrambled up the creek bed. Just below where the track crosses the creek Colin pointed out a gully at the base of Egg Rock. We decided to do a little bit of exploration up this gully (which Colin had explored at another time). This little narrow gully was a delight to see as it had its own unique cool water-swept environment. It was agreed by all that this gully would be well worth further exploration at another time in the future.
After returning (scrambling all the way) we then made our way back up the track past the place where we crossed, continuing up past an old Timber Jinker to another tributary of the creek. Here we turned down towards the creek and then started rock-hopping back to our crossing site. There were many small pools and tiny cascades which made this part of the walk another treat. We found a large pool and cascade and decided this was a great place for lunch. We stayed longer than usual for lunch as the surroundings were very pleasant. After lunch we continued our rock-hopping down the creek to our original crossing point. As what we had done today was quite strenuous and difficult at times it was decided that from here we would make out way back to the cars for a pleasant social drink at the Numinbah Valley Café.
At the café we discussed (as usual) all and sundry, moving to the topic of smartphone configuration. A very pleasant day and we will be back in this area again - Colin.
