Leader – Julie: - Distances Pt Halloran 3.0k, Coochie Mudlo 6.8k, Ferry Ride 3.2k

Walkers – Colin, Jackie, Mary, Christine, Grahame & Helen

2015-03-14 - Point Halloran & Coochie Mudlo Island_186We started our walk at the Point Halloran Conservation Area. The boardwalk is no longer there on the Wet n Wild Circuit but it was still a nice little walk. We started off to do the Point Halloran walk but the beginning of that boardwalk was closed so we walked around the back of some houses through the parkland and then found another entrance onto the other side where I had wanted to go. It is a nice little walk as well and we saw lots of waterlilies and some ducks all swimming in a row.

Report

At least we were in the shade so we walked back the same way rather that follow a path on the other side of the water, as that was in full sun. We then drove and parked at Victoria Point and caught the ferry across to Coochiemudlo Island. Since we were here last there are two new Ferry Terminals that are both wheelchair friendly with ramps instead of the stairs. As arranged we met up with Anne (from Tamborine Mountain) over there and then we had morning tea together. It was very windy on that side of the Island but we were all ready to eat and couldn't wait any longer. Anne walked and talked with us until we got around to the other side of the Island (which was lovely and calm and sheltered) and then she left us to visit her friend that lived on the Island. It was lovely to catch up with her even for such a short time.

We walked a track near the mangroves and then came out near the Community Centre where we had a look at the view back to Victoria Point. We then walked down to the Golf Course and onto the beach. We then walked along the sand and then the rocks and back up to the road. We had a look at the brightly painted Railway Carriages and the animals. We didn't see the donkey this time. Walked back down the road to near the beach where the car ferry comes in and then sat and had our lunch in the shelter shed. The toilet block has some lovely murals painted on them. Was a little bit windy but not as bad as the place we had morning tea.

We caught the 1.45 pm Ferry back to Victoria Point and were pleasantly surprised by a family of Curlews (parents and chick).  They didn't seem too bothered by our presence walking past so we were able to get good photos of them.

We continued on for some yummy refreshments at the Wishing Well Cafe. A small group today but we all had a lovely day nevertheless - Julie

Why does attentiveness to nature matter? In a very fundamental sense, we are what we pay attention to. Paying heed to beauty, grace, and everyday miracles promotes a sense of possibility and coherence that runs deeper and truer than the often illusory commercial, social "realities" advanced by mainstream contemporary culture. ... Our attention is precious, and what we choose to focus it on has enormous consequences. What we choose to look at, and to listen to--these choices change the world. As Thich Nhat Hanh has pointed out, we become the bad television programs that we watch. A society that expends its energies tracking the latest doings of the celebrity couple is fundamentally distinct from one that watches for the first arriving spring migrant birds, or takes a weekend to check out insects in a mountain stream, or looks inside flowers to admire the marvelous ingenuities involved in pollination. The former tends to drag culture down to its lowest commonalities; the latter can lift us up in a sense of unity with all life. The Way of Natural History, edited by Thomas Lowe Fleischner and published by Trinity University Press (Texas)
